“This year, Qingdao was selected as the second batch of pilot cities for the construction of the second-generation low-carbon transportation system in China, which has created conditions for Qingdao to build green traffic,” said Zheng Minghui, director of the Qingdao Municipal Transportation Commission.

Public transport low carbonization

In Qingdao, “low-carbon, energy-saving, convenient and affordable people” is becoming a distinctive feature of public transportation. Underground, Metro Line 3 is stepping up and is expected to be completed and opened in 2014. By 2018, Qingdao will form a 150-kilometer metro backbone network that will basically cover the city’s six districts and major external transportation hubs.

On the ground, the sharing rate of bus trips in the main city area exceeds 30%; 12 “tunnel transits” across Jiaozhou Bay take on the functions of public transportation between the New Coastal Economic Zone and the main city; they are used to serve the development of “three cities” along the coast of Jiaozhou Bay. Qingdao will plan to construct the Jiaozhou Bay Light Rail and the second subsea tunnel; the intercity light rail from the main city to the Blue Silicon Valley has already entered the tendering phase, and it is expected to start construction across the board next year.

In the choice of public transportation tools, Qingdao City is the first choice for “environmental protection”. More than 90% of buses in urban areas have reached the national III or above emission standards; of the 2,000 new energy buses that have been updated in the past two years, there are 1,600 buses for natural gas.

Green application of energy

Green energy is widely promoted in Qingdao's transportation industry, with significant benefits. The Qingdao Port Container Tire Hoisting “Oil to Electric” technology enhances the safety of equipment operation by means of the power supply technology program of the mobile trolley line, reduces environmental pollution, and reduces operational noise, which can save the company more than 30 million yuan each year. Intelligent traffic management

In November 2011, Qingdao's first 3G Regional Intelligent Dispatching Command Center was commissioned at Hongda Bus Company. Through intelligent scheduling, direct video communication between the dispatcher and the driver can be achieved. By the end of this year, Qingdao will build five intelligent dispatch centers, and 100 lines and 3,000 buses will realize intelligent dispatch management.

Industry supervision has also entered the new world due to the application of informatization achievements. The “two passengers and one crisis” vehicle GPS monitoring system implements 24-hour surveillance of 1,808 vehicles across the city through the Global Positioning Center platform, effectively preventing illegal behavior such as vehicle speeding and overtime operation. Through the Qingdao Mainline Highway Information Platform, the public can obtain information on the latest traffic conditions through radio, radio, websites, and variable information boards on highways, which greatly facilitates travel.
