"Welt am Sonntag" quoted relevant sources as saying that Volkswagen executive Oliver Schmidt had pleaded guilty in the United States for crimes committed during the discharge gate incident, but may apply to Germany for enforcement of the verdict.
"The Sunday Times" reported that Schmidt's application may be approved by the US Department of Justice and German courts. Schmidt received a final decision on Wednesday and will face seven years of imprisonment and a $400,000 fine. This was also the biggest penalty that Germany had after signing a plea agreement with the prosecutor in August after conspiring to conspire to mislead US government officials and violate the Clean Air Act.
Schmidt also read the written documents in court and confessed to the facts of the crime.
The Sunday Times quoted Schmidt lawyer Alexander Saettele as saying that it would consider whether this could be done, but no final decision has yet been made. Saettele revealed that the court’s verdict was not surprising, but he was still a little disappointed and still failed to convince the lawyer. Danckert Huber Baerlein, the German legal firm where Saettele is located, did not respond to this response in time outside of working hours.
David DuMouchel, lawyer for Butzel Long, a Detroit law firm responsible for the Schmidt case, also declined to provide further details of the case. In the email, he wrote: "There are still many things that need to be resolved. The matter is still very difficult and urgent, so I cannot comment in time."
Schmidt may also face disciplinary actions within the public at the same time, including damages, termination of contracts, etc. Before February 2015, he was responsible for the company's environmental and engineering business.
