Bosch has developed a motor-based automatic parking brake system
Bosch's R&D team is currently working on a brake caliper integrated with a motor, designed for mass production. This innovative system replaces the traditional parking brake mechanism, allowing automakers to eliminate the need for manual or robotic brake levers. Instead, drivers can now engage the parking brake with a single button press, offering greater convenience and improving the overall driving experience. This change also frees up valuable space on the center console, making it easier for passengers to store items or access controls.
The new product, called APB-M (Automatic Parking Brake - Electromechanical Brake), brings a high level of comfort to drivers due to its quiet operation and fast response time. Additionally, it supports advanced features such as a software-based wear indicator that alerts the driver through the dashboard. Bosch plans to launch the APB-M in full-scale production by 2010, marking a significant step forward in automotive technology.
When used in conjunction with the Electronic Stability System (ESP), the APB-M enhances safety and convenience in various driving scenarios. For instance, when a vehicle comes to a stop on an incline, the ESP system maintains brake pressure even after the driver lifts their foot from the pedal. Once the driver starts moving again, the brake automatically releases. If the engine is turned off or the driver exits the vehicle, the motor engages the parking brake permanently. Upon restarting the vehicle, there’s no need for the driver to manually release the brake—the system handles it automatically at the right moment, ensuring a smooth and stress-free driving experience.
