Police and fire in Lincolnshire host charity cook-off

In a recent article published by The Daily Herald, there's an inspiring story about a unique charity event taking place in Lincolnshire. This weekend, local police officers and firefighters are trading their usual tools for kitchen utensils in support of a young girl named Ava Lee, who is bravely battling cancer. Organized by Lincolnshire Police Officer Brian Balinski, alongside other dedicated members from the Lincolnshire Police Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, this charity cook-off is set to take place on September 27 at the Village Hall located at 1 Olde Half Day Road. Running from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., visitors can expect a delightful barbecue featuring ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket. Balinski expressed excitement over the collaboration, saying, "Firemen are often known to be good cooks, and we have some passionate chefs within our ranks too. It seemed like a fantastic way to showcase what we can do while raising funds for a worthy cause." Fire Chief Fred Krueger chimed in with confidence, stating, "While fire crews may be renowned for being great cooks, the police are famous for being hearty eaters—so we're definitely giving them a run for their money!" The primary beneficiary of this event is six-year-old Ava Lee, diagnosed earlier this year with a rare form of leukemia. Currently residing near Lincolnshire, Ava urgently requires a bone marrow transplant to replace her current blood cells with healthy ones. Unfortunately, none of her immediate family members match her requirements, meaning a complete stranger will need to come forward as her lifesaver. Ava's mother, Esther Lee, shared how the diagnosis came about after repeated visits to the doctor due to recurring skin infections. Since then, Ava has undergone seven months of chemotherapy treatment. With no matching donor found yet, the family remains hopeful but aware that time is critical. Brian Balinski emphasized the importance of finding a suitable marrow donor, explaining that testing costs deter many potential contributors. To cover these expenses, participants in the cook-off will sell samples of their dishes, aiming to raise enough funds for attendees to join the National Marrow Donor Program's Be The Match initiative. The event organizers hope to attract at least 40 new blood donors, believing it could significantly impact those attending emotionally. Esther Lee expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support, describing it as both humbling and heartwarming. As I write this, I am reminded of the incredible strength displayed by Ava and her family throughout this challenging journey. Their resilience serves as a beacon of hope for others facing similar battles. Let’s hope this event not only raises vital funds but also inspires countless individuals to consider becoming part of something truly meaningful.
