In the latest edition of The Daily Herald, there's a touching story about a special charity event happening in Lincolnshire. This weekend, police officers and firefighters from the area are trading their usual tools for kitchen essentials to support a young local girl battling cancer.
The Lincolnshire Police Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District are organizing a charity cook-off at the village hall, located at 1 Olde Half Day Road, on September 27th. The event will kick off at 9 a.m. and wrap up by 2 p.m., offering a variety of delicious dishes including ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket.
Officer Brian Balinski, one of the event’s masterminds, mentioned, "We figured it was a fantastic way to showcase our hidden talents in the kitchen." He also noted how many officers within the department share a passion for cooking, making this a unique opportunity to combine their skills with a noble cause. Fire Chief Fred Krueger chimed in with confidence, stating, "While firemen are known for being great cooks, the police are known for their hearty appetites. I’d say we’ve got a pretty good shot at winning this."
The primary beneficiary of this event is 6-year-old Ava Lee, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia back in February. Currently residing near Lincolnshire, Ava urgently needs a bone-marrow transplant to generate healthy blood cells. Unfortunately, no matches have been found within her immediate family yet.
Balinski emphasized, "Our top priority is finding a matching bone-marrow donor for Ava. We've been attempting to organize blood drives for a while now, but her story inspired us to take things further." Testing to become a marrow donor involves a simple cheek swab, which might deter some potential donors due to associated costs. To cover these expenses and encourage participation, participants will be selling samples of their barbecued specialties.
Despite extensive testing, none of Ava's relatives have matched her, emphasizing the need for an unrelated donor. According to her mother, Esther Lee, Ava was diagnosed after a persistent skin infection led them to seek medical advice. She has undergone chemotherapy for seven months now. Without a bone-marrow match, the next option would involve umbilical-cord blood transplantation.
Balinski expressed hope that around 40 people would sign up as blood donors during the event, believing it could deeply resonate with attendees. Esther Lee and her husband, Michael, couldn't be more grateful for the overwhelming community support they've received.
As someone who has followed this story closely, I must say it’s heartwarming to see such unity and generosity in action. It’s inspiring to know that ordinary individuals can come together like this to make a significant difference in someone's life. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Ava finds her much-needed match soon.
