Hoarder house in Glencoe causes Haz Mat response, 5/15/15

On Friday, May 15, 2015, the Glencoe Public Safety Department responded to a hazardous materials alarm after authorities found a residence housing 39 dogs that were severely neglected. The Chicago Tribune reported excerpts from their website detailing the disturbing situation. According to the report, nearly 40 dogs were found living in deplorable conditions, covered in feces and matted fur. Five of these animals were ultimately euthanized due to their poor health. Firefighters wearing hazmat suits managed to remove the dogs from the home located on the 800 block of Greenwood Avenue. Neighbors mentioned that rescue teams worked tirelessly for nine hours on Thursday and another four hours on Friday. The initial call to police came from concerned neighbors who requested a welfare check on Wednesday. Upon arrival, officers discovered an excessive number of dogs—well beyond the limit allowed by Glencoe's municipal regulations. The homeowner, believed to be a woman in her 60s, had lived in the property for several years. While occasional barking could be heard, it seemed like only a few dogs were present. Public records indicate that the previous owner of the house, a 65-year-old woman, hasn’t faced any charges related to this case. Interestingly, a tree had fallen onto the house, and the new owner had recently purchased the property while the prior occupant remained inside. The rescued dogs, aged between 2 and 5 years old, were almost unrecognizable due to their filthy state. Their eyes and ears became visible only after thorough cleaning and shaving. Despite receiving food, many suffered from severe infections causing the loss of their ear tips and tails. The animals were visibly frightened and unused to human contact. Most struggled to walk properly due to thick layers of hair and accumulated waste. The severity of their condition necessitated the euthanasia of five particularly ill or dangerously aggressive dogs. Cleaning each dog proved challenging; it took around two hours per animal. Even then, the stench from one dog was overwhelming. On Saturday morning, three staff members were diligently working on grooming one particular dog, carefully shaving its fur and trimming overgrown nails. Another dog, already cleaned, crouched nervously in its crate. Kelly Moyer, the founder of Tails of Hope, expressed her intention to take in more dogs once they complete their medical treatment and vaccinations. Her team plans to rehabilitate the animals, placing them in foster homes before finding them forever families. This heartbreaking incident sheds light on the importance of monitoring pet ownership standards and ensuring proper care for all animals. It also highlights the critical role played by organizations like Tails of Hope in rescuing and rehoming neglected pets.
