Hoarder house in Glencoe causes Haz Mat response, 5/15/15

On Friday, May 15th, 2015, the Glencoe Public Safety Department responded to what’s being called a Haz Mat situation following the discovery of a house containing 39 dogs that were severely neglected. According to reports, the animals were found covered in feces and had matted fur. Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune detail how nearly 40 dogs were found in this condition, with five of them needing to be euthanized due to their poor health. Firefighters, donning hazmat suits, worked tirelessly to remove the dogs from the residence located on Greenwood Avenue. Neighbors mentioned that emergency personnel were at the scene for a total of 13 hours over two days—nine hours on Thursday and four hours on Friday. The initial call came in on Wednesday when police conducted a welfare check and found 35 dogs inside the home, far exceeding the limit set by Glencoe's municipal regulations regarding the number of pets allowed in a single household. Local records indicate that a woman, approximately 65 years old, recently sold the property but hasn’t faced charges related to this case. A tree had fallen onto part of the house, which was purchased some months prior, and she continued to reside there until recently. When the dogs were finally examined, they ranged between 2 and 5 years old and were so filthy that their eyes and ears couldn’t be seen until they were thoroughly cleaned and shaved. Despite signs of having been fed, many displayed severe infections resulting in the loss of parts of their ears and tails. Rescue workers described the animals as terrified and unaccustomed to human contact. Their condition was such that moving freely seemed foreign to most of them. The process of cleaning each dog took around two hours per animal, requiring sedation due to their distress. Even after being cleaned, one dog remained skittish and hid in its crate. Kelly Moyer, founder of Tails of Hope, anticipates taking in more dogs once they’ve undergone necessary treatments like vaccinations. Her team intends to rehabilitate these animals, placing them in foster homes before finding them permanent ones. This heartbreaking situation has drawn attention to issues surrounding pet care and overpopulation, prompting discussions about stricter enforcement of local laws and increased support for organizations aiding neglected animals.
