In an impressive display of engineering prowess, the Bunting manufacturing plant in Redditch, UK recently completed the construction of the largest Electro Crossbelt Magnet ever produced by the company. Weighing a hefty 13 tons, this massive magnet has been installed in a gold mine located in Northern Finland. Over the span of a year, it will work tirelessly to remove and separate unwanted tramp metal from approximately 2.7 million tons of conveyed ore. This protective measure helps safeguard critical equipment like crushers and screens from damage.
The Electro Crossbelt Magnet functions based on strong magnetic forces that quickly lift and automatically discard any ferrous metal present in the conveyed ore. Positioned over the non-magnetic head pulley of a conveyor in a crossbelt arrangement, it generates a powerful magnetic field. As the tramp metal enters this field, it gets magnetically attracted and lifted onto a self-cleaning rubber belt equipped with heavy-duty rubber wipers. These wipers ensure efficient removal of the collected metal, directing it away from the ore and into a designated collection area.
This innovative Electro Crossbelt Magnet is a key component of a major expansion project underway at the Kittila Gold Mine in Northern Finland. Working closely with mine operators, Bunting's engineering team designed a custom solution addressing the specific challenges faced by the mine. They took into account factors such as conveyor width, ore volume, and the properties of the tramp ferrous metal during the design phase. Using their in-house Electro Crossbelt Magnet Selection Program, they determined the ideal magnetic field and force density needed for effective separation.
The end result is the model 205 OCW50 Electro Crossbelt Magnet, featuring a 17 kW electromagnetic coil cooled by recirculated oil. This cooling system is vital for maintaining the magnet's efficiency since the magnetic force decreases as the coil temperature rises. Measuring 4.2 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and 2.2 meters in height, this imposing magnet was assembled at Bunting's Redditch facility.
"The size and complexity of this project presented numerous challenges, especially given the circumstances during the pandemic," notes Adrian Coleman, General Manager at Bunting's Redditch location. "However, after over four decades of experience in designing and building large-scale Electro Crossbelt Magnets, we were able to successfully complete this project."
