Technical Tips for Prevention and Control of Rice Planthoppers

The appropriate period for prevention and control will be implemented immediately before and after September 10, with pest management initiated as soon as possible within one week. The late-maturing single-season rice in the Huaibei and Jianghuai regions, which are key areas, will be prioritized for control, along with double-season rice and late-maturing single-season rice along the Yangtze River. The monitoring thresholds for intervention are set at 100 or more young nymphs per square meter, and over 1,000 nymphs per square meter. Prevention measures include blocking paddy fields and targeting newly hatched nymphs. For this stage, a mixture of 25% ciprofloxacin (80g per mu) and 40% chlorpyrifos (100ml per mu) can be used, or alternatively 48% emulsifiable concentrate (80ml per mu). When dealing with middle- to older-stage nymphs, it is recommended to apply 40% chlorpyrifos (120ml per mu) combined with Silk Run (15–20g per mu), or 48% emulsifiable concentrate (100ml per mu) plus Silk Run. During pesticide application, sufficient water should be used—manual sprayers should use no less than 60 kg of water per mu for late-maturing single-season japonica rice, while motorized sprayers should use no less than 30 kg per mu. For single-season japonica rice, manual sprayers should apply no less than 40 kg of water per mu, and motorized sprayers should use no less than 15 kg. After spraying, the field should maintain shallow water for 3–5 days to enhance effectiveness. For dry or anhydrous fields, a mixture of 80% dichlorvos (300ml per mu) and 15–20kg of dry sand or soil should be applied between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on sunny days. This method ensures better coverage and absorption, especially in areas where moisture levels are low. Farmers are advised to follow safety protocols when handling chemicals and to ensure proper ventilation during application. Regular monitoring of affected areas is also essential to assess the effectiveness of the treatment and adjust strategies if needed.
