Towable Electromagnetic Sweepers for Airport Runways

Towable Electromagnetic Sweepers for Airport Runways

Airport Foreign Object Debris (FOD) is a major concern in the aviation industry, costing airlines and airports billions each year in repairs and delays. FOD includes any object that can cause damage to aircraft or pose a risk to personnel. Metal debris, such as screws, nails, or other ferrous materials, is particularly dangerous, as it can lead to tire punctures, engine damage, or even catastrophic failures. In high-speed environments like airport runways, these hazards are magnified by the powerful jet blast during takeoff, which can launch debris into sensitive areas.

To address this critical issue, Bunting has developed a specialized solution: the Towable Electromagnetic Sweeper (EMRS24). These custom-built machines are designed to efficiently remove hazardous metal debris from airport runways, ensuring a safer environment for both aircraft and ground staff. Recently, Bunting delivered three of these advanced sweepers to an airport in Indonesia, where they have been successfully deployed to maintain runway safety.

Bunting is a leading global manufacturer of magnetic separation solutions, with a strong reputation in eddy current separators, metal detectors, and electrostatic systems. The company operates production facilities in the U.S., UK, and other key regions, ensuring reliable service and support worldwide. Their expertise in designing robust, high-performance equipment makes them a trusted partner for airports and industrial clients across the globe.

The Towable Electromagnetic Sweeper is built for durability and efficiency. It features a powerful electromagnetic block that generates a strong magnetic field, capable of lifting both large and small ferrous objects from various surfaces. Whether it's a runway, road, or warehouse floor, the sweeper is designed to handle tough conditions and deliver consistent performance.

Each unit is easily attached to the back of a vehicle, such as a service truck or SUV, using a simple tow hitch. The design includes two sturdy wheels for smooth mobility and a user-friendly control panel inside the vehicle cabin. Operators can activate or deactivate the magnet at will, allowing for quick release of collected debris. This level of control ensures safe and efficient operation, even in high-traffic environments.

These sweepers are ideal for outdoor use and operate at speeds between 5 to 6 mph. They come in a range of widths, from 1200mm to 2440mm, and can be customized to fit specific site requirements. The units used in Indonesia feature a 2440mm magnetic width and weigh approximately 1500 kg. Each is powered by a 220VAC generator and a gasoline-powered Honda engine, housed within a protective frame for added durability.

The system also includes a start/stop button with auto-reverse functionality, making it easy to manage the magnet’s operation. A rotating flash beacon on the control panel provides a clear visual signal of the machine’s status, improving visibility and safety for operators and nearby personnel.

"We specialize in creating effective solutions for airport maintenance," says Phil Tree, Bunting’s Technical Sales Manager. "Our Towable Electromagnetic Sweepers provide a practical and reliable way to keep runways free of metal debris, reducing the risk of costly damage and enhancing overall safety."

Specialty Chemical Manufacturing Industry

These chemicals, used in industries such as petrochemicals, power generation, and industrial heating, need to withstand extreme conditions without degrading or losing effectiveness. Key aspects include developing additives that improve heat transfer efficiency, reduce corrosion, and prevent deposit formation. This requires deep understanding of chemical properties, process engineering, and industry-specific needs, ensuring optimal performance and sustainability in thermal oil systems.
