Working fire in Chicago, 1-23-21

This is a report from Eric Haak:

At 3:15 AM on Saturday, January 23rd, units from Chicago’s 14th Battalion were called to 2213 West Cermak in response to a reported fire. Engine Company 23 arrived just minutes later and confirmed a working fire on the rear porches of a 30x70, three-story, ordinary occupancy apartment building. Firefighters worked for nearly 20 minutes trying to contain the flames, but the fire quickly spread into the basement and then the first and second floors. By around 3:35 AM, crews had to switch to a defensive strategy. There was also fire extension into the adjacent “D” side exposure building, which was quickly brought under control.

Engine 109 used their deck gun in sector “C,” while Squad 1 deployed their Snorkel. Eventually, the fire was knocked down using multiple hand lines, along with master streams from the Snorkel and Tower Ladder 5. The entire operation lasted over four hours, with temperatures remaining around 10 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the incident. Despite the cold and challenging conditions, crews worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control and prevent further damage.
