Autodesk has launched a new tool called Autodesk Informed Design, aimed at transforming the way building design and construction are handled. This cloud-based solution connects design and manufacturing workflows from the very beginning, making the entire process more efficient and streamlined. Industrialized construction is becoming increasingly important in the AECO (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations) industry, as it allows for faster project delivery, improved quality, and reduced waste.
The AECO sector is under growing pressure to meet rising demands for housing and infrastructure while also addressing environmental concerns. With nearly 100,000 new affordable homes needed every day by 2030, and construction being one of the most wasteful industries globally, there's a clear need for innovation. Autodesk Informed Design is designed to help the industry move toward a more sustainable and scalable model by integrating manufacturing principles into the building process.
Ryan McMahon, director and general manager of Informed Design at Autodesk, emphasized that the current way of working in the AECO industry isn't sustainable or scalable. "The answer lies in industrialized construction," he said. "Informed Design brings design and manufacturing together from day one, allowing architects to design with confidence and manufacturers to share accurate product data."
The platform offers two key add-ins: one for Revit and one for Inventor. Autodesk Informed Design for Revit empowers designers to work with pre-defined, manufacturable products, ensuring accuracy and reducing errors. It includes features like template discovery, customization, and real-time validation of design decisions. For Inventor users, the add-in helps product managers and engineers align their manufacturing capabilities with customer needs, streamlining collaboration and improving BIM content creation.
Green Canopy NODE, a company focused on solving housing and environmental challenges, has already seen benefits using early versions of the tool. According to Benjamin Hall, senior product manager at Green Canopy NODE, the software allows for creative yet practical designs that can be mass-produced without sacrificing quality or aesthetics.
IDC analyst Jeffrey Hojlo praised the potential of Informed Design, noting that it enables better collaboration across the AECO ecosystem by creating a connected digital thread between design and manufacturing. "This makes it easier to optimize supplier performance and deliver high-quality products that fit seamlessly into the overall building design," he said.
For those interested in learning more, Autodesk invites users to explore Informed Design for Revit and Informed Design for Inventor. An upcoming webinar hosted by Engineering News-Record will also provide insights into how the tool can improve workflows and drive sustainability in construction projects.
