Plants of Tomorrow Drone Days: Advancing Innovation in Holcim Cement Plant Inspections with Elios

The long-standing collaboration between Holcim and Flyability has finally reached a significant milestone with the highly successful launch of the inaugural European Drone Days. Held at Flyability’s headquarters in Lausanne from June 20th to 22nd, 2023, this event brought together representatives from 15 out of the 16 European countries where Holcim plants are equipped with Elios drones. The first-ever Plants of Tomorrow (PoT) Drone Days marked a major step forward in integrating drone technology into Holcim's operations. Over three intensive days, the event focused on deepening the understanding of Flyability’s drone technology and exploring new applications within the cement industry. Patrick Thévoz, CEO of Flyability, welcomed the 25 Holcim pilots and plant representatives to the event, urging them to continue pushing the boundaries of drone innovation beyond just product improvements. By the end of the event, it was clear how deeply integrated drones had become in Holcim’s processes, highlighting the immense benefits this technology brings to the industry. Flyability, as a leading provider of advanced indoor inspection drones, has tailored its Elios drones specifically for harsh environments like cement plants. These drones are uniquely capable of performing high-quality inspections in dusty, hazardous conditions—capabilities unmatched by any other drone on the market. Since initial trials at Holcim’s Eclepens plant in 2016, the drone fleet has grown to 37 units, with over 100 trained pilots. Roze Wesby, Global Head of Plants of Tomorrow, echoed the sentiments shared during the event. She highlighted the multifaceted advantages of adopting drone technology, including improved health and safety, reduced operational costs, and increased productivity. "By eliminating the need for risky confined space entries, we not only protect our workers but also save on costly scaffolding and maintenance expenses," she explained. Networking opportunities were abundant, fostering a sense of camaraderie among Holcim’s drone operators. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, underscoring the event’s success in strengthening the drone community within Holcim and encouraging further exploration of drone applications. In conclusion, the European PoT Drone Days underscored the transformative power of drone technology in the cement industry. By embracing this innovation, Holcim has set a precedent for operational excellence, safety, and efficiency. Looking ahead, this collaboration promises continued advancements, reinforcing Holcim’s position as a pioneer in technological progress within the cement sector. As someone who witnessed the event firsthand, I can attest to the energy and excitement it generated. The synergy between Flyability and Holcim is palpable, and the potential for future growth in drone technology within the industry is vast. It’s inspiring to see such dedication to innovation and safety, and I’m eager to see what the future holds for this partnership.
