Classic engine at Darien-Woodridge

On Tuesday, we highlighted the inclusion of the Darien-Woodridge Fire District on our site. Among the vehicles showcased at Station 2 is a truly unique antique piece with quite the backstory. Jack Connors shared some fascinating details about this engine along with a couple of photos. This particular engine is a 1949 Oshkosh/Howe model equipped with a powerful 1,000-GPM pump and a 1,200-gallon water tank. The Oshkosh chassis is an impressive Model W-2201, boasting serial number 3541. Meanwhile, the Howe serial number is HR-10-7961. This image here captures the 1949 Oshkosh Howe engine as it was originally lettered for the Belmont Fire District. You can see the distinct design and branding that marked its early days in service. (Jack Connors collection) Interestingly, this engine had quite the journey before landing where it is today. Initially, it served at the renowned Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Illinois. Later, it transferred to Grandview Park, Illinois, which eventually became part of Oak Lawn. Eventually, it joined the Belmont Fire District, which later merged into the Darien-Woodridge Fire District. Here's another shot of the same engine now bearing the current decals of the Darien-Woodridge Fire District. Although the new logo adorns the vehicle’s doors, the original Belmont Fire Protection District name remains proudly displayed on the hood. (Jack Connors collection) It's amazing how such a historic piece continues to serve and be remembered, showcasing not only its durability but also its rich history. If you have any additional insights or stories related to this engine, feel free to share them. We're always eager to learn more from our readers!
