On Tuesday, we highlighted the inclusion of the Darien-Woodridge Fire District on our website. Among the vehicles showcased at Station 2 is an extraordinary antique fire engine with quite the backstory. Jack Connors shared some fascinating details about this vehicle along with a couple of pictures.
This particular engine is a 1949 Oshkosh/Howe model equipped with a powerful 1,000-GPM pump and a 1,200-gallon water tank. The Oshkosh chassis is a Model W-2201, bearing the serial number 3541, while the Howe serial number is HR-10-7961.
Looking at the images, you can see the impressive design of this classic piece of firefighting history. The first photo captures the 1949 Oshkosh Howe engine as it was originally lettered for the Belmont Fire District. Jack Connors’ collection provides us with these nostalgic visuals.
This engine began its career at the renowned Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Illinois. From there, it moved to Grandview Park, Illinois, which later became part of Oak Lawn. Eventually, it found its way to the Belmont Fire District, which eventually merged into the Darien-Woodridge Fire District.
In the second image, we see how the engine looks today under its current owners. A Darien-Woodridge Fire District decal now adorns the vehicle, covering the former Belmont Fire Protection District name on the door. However, the original Belmont name remains visible on the hood, adding to its historical charm. These photos, also from Jack Connors’ collection, give us a glimpse into the engine’s journey through time.
