The 2007 Environmental Protection Bulletin has objectively described PetroChina's practice and performance in fulfilling environmental responsibility. The report includes environmental management, environmental protection input, Olympic propaganda, environmental protection propaganda, environmental air quality in mining areas, pollution discharge, pollution accidents, ISO14000 management system, and environmental public welfare. PetroChina’s 20 companies, 108 grass-roots units, and 100 individuals were also included in the report because of their advanced environmental status. This is the first time that CNPC has independently selected environmental protection advanced collectives and individuals.
It is worth mentioning that this report demonstrates the strong characteristics of the Olympics and the "Olympic Protection" has become an independent chapter. As a partner of the 2008 Olympic Games, CNPC actively took measures to effectively guarantee the supply of natural gas and clean oil products and made positive contributions to improving the air quality in Beijing. China National Petroleum Corporation has invested hundreds of millions of yuan and has completed the oil and gas recovery and renovation of 557 gas stations and 262 tank trucks in Beijing and surrounding areas, reducing VOC pollution and ensuring compliance with discharge standards. PetroChina will also organize the production of the country’s standard IV gasoline and diesel to supply the Beijing area, ensuring safe and stable supply of clean energy during the Olympic Games.
The publication of the "2007 Environmental Protection Bulletin" supplements and improves China Petroleum Social Responsibility Report. Since 1998, CNPC has issued environmental protection reports for 10 consecutive years, which fully reflects the company's greater focus on its own environmental responsibility.
As can be seen from the report, in 2007, the increase in the total amount of sulfur dioxide emissions from China's oil has decreased significantly from the previous year. The two main indicators of wastewater discharge decreased by 13.2% and 4.4% respectively compared with 2006. In 2007, CNPC also carried out clean production audits on 195 sets of equipment, implemented 2780 clean production plans, rectified and standardized 3,078 pollutant discharge ports, reduced COD emissions by 2,660 tons, and reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by 3,990 tons annually. The report also publishes special treatment of hidden dangers. As of the end of 2007, China Petroleum had accumulated a total of 16.42 billion yuan in special environmental protection investment, which played a strong role in giving priority to the implementation of environmental risk control, pollution control compliance, and key emission reduction projects.
In the practice of accelerating the construction of comprehensive international energy companies, CNPC pays more attention to environmental protection and public welfare undertakings. In 2007, CNPC donated RMB 300 million to support the national carbon sink business. It also hosted the 14th annual ISO/TC207 conference and sponsored participation in the “Methane Marketization International Conference†and “Green China Person of the Year Award†and other influential events. The awareness of environmental protection and social responsibility and its role in the international environmental protection field are even more apparent.
