Rumors have circulated about the Mazda 6 potentially slashing prices for three years, and the Mazda 3 reportedly heading to Nanjing. A month ago, the reporter learned of another potential model from reliable sources: the Mazda 9 is expected to be produced at FAW-China Sino-Qingdao Automobile Co., Ltd., a joint venture between FAW Group and Qingdao Yuzhong Tobacco Group.
On December 15 last year, FAW Group and Qingdao Yuzhong Tobacco Group established the joint venture, with FAW holding 60% and Qingdao Yuzhong 40%. FAW plans to develop passenger vehicles in Qingdao, focusing on introducing new models that can compete effectively in the market. At the time, industry insiders suggested that the first model could be the highly competitive Mazda 3 sedan.
A source within FAW Car mentioned that the domestic market is extremely competitive, especially in the economy and mid-size car segments. While launching a model like the Mazda 3 might bring some sales, the profit margin would be relatively low. Therefore, from a strategic perspective, FAW is considering introducing a premium vehicle. It was speculated that the Mazda 9 could be produced in Qingdao, while the Mazda 3 may be manufactured in Nanjing.
Although the news about the Mazda 3 moving to Nanjing seems to be confirmed, the introduction of the new model under FAW Yuzhong remains uncertain. However, last week, the reporter received confirmation that the Mazda 9 will be located at FAW Yuzhong, with an annual production capacity of 150,000 units. The new factory is also expected to import production equipment from Japan.
To verify the information, the reporter reached out to FAW Group, Suizhong Automobile, and Hainan Mazda, but all parties remained silent. Eventually, an anonymous source from the Suizhong Automotive Technology Department confirmed to the reporter that FAW Group and Suizhong Automobile are currently in negotiations with Mazda to introduce the Mazda 9 model. These discussions have been ongoing for several months, and the introduction of the Mazda 9 appears highly likely, as no other models are currently in the pipeline.
