Tim Olk spent most of Tuesday stationed in the southbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), capturing the aftermath of a major accident that caused widespread traffic chaos. According to a report from the Southtown Star:
"...an overturned tanker led to the closure of the southbound lanes between 95th and 127th streets. The lanes remained shut from before noon until around 8 p.m., turning rush hour into a nightmare for commuters..."
The incident occurred when a vehicle made an illegal U-turn in front of the tanker, causing it to overturn at approximately 11:43 a.m. at 127th Street, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Michelle Kistulinec. The truck was carrying hydrochloric acid, a dangerous chemical that required immediate attention from emergency crews.
Firefighters worked quickly to contain the spill by using sand to absorb the leaked substance. Contractors later arrived to begin the delicate process of off-loading the remaining contents from the tanker. Throughout the day, workers monitored the operation closely, ensuring the chemical was safely transferred to another container.
Photographs taken by Tim Olk show the extent of the damage, including the overturned semi-truck, the spilled acid, and the efforts of emergency responders to manage the situation. As the cleanup continued, three heavy wreckers were brought in to upright the tractor and empty trailer, signaling the gradual return of normal traffic conditions on the busy tollway.
