Box Alarm in Lake Zurich 3-24-14

This is from Larry Shapiro:

The Lake Zurich Fire Department responded to a fire call just after 5 p.m. on Monday at Midwest Motors, located at 540 Cortland Drive. Upon arrival, the first engine unit reported light smoke coming from the eaves of the building. As the smoke intensified, the alarm was quickly upgraded to a Box Alarm. The strip center housed a large indoor showroom featuring high-end and exotic used cars.

The fire was initially reported on the second floor and in the attic on the southern end of the sprinklered building. Fire crews managed to contain the blaze to that section, though there was significant water damage throughout the structure. While some vehicles were damaged, the majority were successfully removed before the fire could spread further.

Multiple fire departments were dispatched to the scene, including engines from Lake Zurich (4 units), Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, and Barrington Countryside. Rescue trucks came from Wauconda and Arlington Heights, while squads arrived from Long Grove and Deerfield. Ambulances were provided by Barrington, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Libertyville. Chief officers from Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Fox River Grove, Long Grove, and Buffalo Grove were also on site.

Several photos captured the response efforts. One image shows the D side of the building, with firefighters working closely to control the flames. Another features the Arlington Heights Tower 1 setting up for operations. A third photo highlights Wauconda firefighters using a master stream from their tower ladder to tackle the remaining fire. Wauconda’s tower ladder was positioned in front of the building, and firefighters were seen conducting overhaul work on the D side.

At the A-D corner of the building, where the fire was most intense, crews worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control. A Deerfield firefighter helped push a Viper out of the showroom, showcasing the effort to save valuable assets. Overhaul operations continued from the Arlington Heights tower ladder, with crews carefully inspecting the area for any lingering embers.

Three of Lake Zurich’s four Pierce engines were on the scene, highlighting the department's strong presence. Both tower ladders were used during the overhaul phase, demonstrating the coordinated response. A Palatine intern was seen receiving instruction on how to use a hand line, emphasizing the training aspect of the operation. A McLaren sports car, one of the expensive vehicles inside at the time, was also photographed, underscoring the value of the property affected.

A video of the incident will be posted later. You can view the complete gallery of images here.
