This is from Larry Shapiro:
The Lake Zurich Fire Department responded to a fire call just after 5 p.m. on Monday at Midwest Motors, located at 540 Cortland Drive. When the first engine arrived, they noticed light smoke coming from the eaves of the building. As the smoke intensified, the alarm was quickly escalated to a Box Alarm. The structure was a strip center housing a large indoor showroom filled with high-end and exotic used cars.
The fire broke out on the second floor and in the attic on the southern end of the sprinklered building. Firefighters managed to contain the flames to that area, though there was significant water damage throughout the facility. While some vehicles were damaged, the majority were successfully removed before the situation worsened.
Multiple fire departments were on the scene, including Lake Zurich (4 units), Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, and Barrington Countryside. Tower companies came from Wauconda and Arlington Heights, while squads were dispatched from Long Grove and Deerfield. Ambulances arrived from Barrington, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Libertyville. Chief officers from several departments, including Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Fox River Grove, Long Grove, and Buffalo Grove, were also present.
Several photos from the scene show the extent of the fire and the coordinated response. One image captures the D side of the building, highlighting the damage. Another shows the Arlington Heights Tower 1 setting up for operations. Firefighters from Wauconda were seen using a master stream from their tower ladder, while others worked on the D side during the overhaul phase.
A key location of the fire was the A-D corner of the building. A Deerfield firefighter helped push a Viper out of the showroom, showing the efforts to save valuable vehicles. Overhaul work was conducted from the Arlington Heights tower ladder, and both tower ladders were used for this purpose.
One photo features a Palatine intern receiving instruction on the use of a hand line, emphasizing the training aspect of the operation. Another image shows a rare McLaren sports car, one of the expensive vehicles inside the building during the fire. Three of Lake Zurich’s four Pierce engines were also seen on the scene, demonstrating the scale of the response.
