SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–After two months on the road, the 3DRV: Driven by Design road tour has started to reveal the many ways that companies and individuals are using 3D design, reality capture, and fabrication technologies to shape the world around them.
TJ McCue, the host of the 3DRV tour and an author, is not only showcasing 3D innovation but also raising awareness about its potential. He's helping people understand how these tools—many of which are free or low-cost—can be used in everyday life and business.
“From everyday consumers to entrepreneurs, 3D technology (like scanning, printing, and design) fascinates people. Once you start a conversation about it, they're always curious, engaged, and eager to learn more,†said McCue.
The 3DRV road tour, which began on May 16th, 2014, and is supported by industry leaders like Autodesk, HP, NVIDIA, Stratasys, FARO, and Jayco, will travel over 100 stops across the U.S. in eight months. Early highlights include appearances at Maker Faire, discussions on building a lunar lander and 3D printing in space, modeling for clean air in operating rooms, personal manufacturing with projects like Monkey Likes Shiny, laser scanning a Starbucks, and exploring how artists use free 3D design apps and 3D printing. It also features how 3D design and simulation are being used to improve infrastructure like bridges and roads.
“There’s a lot of innovation happening all across the country, and this tour is showing us where the future of making things is heading,†said Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President at Autodesk. “This aligns perfectly with our mission to help everyone design and create anything they can imagine.â€
In just 69 days, McCue has driven 4,627 miles, made 32 stops, consumed 207 cups of coffee, and written 33 blog posts. “There’s definitely a strong pulse out there. People get excited when they realize we’re on the edge of a real revolution in manufacturing—and it’s open to them,†he added. “After six weeks on the road, it’s clear that manufacturing isn’t just for factories anymore. With affordable and accessible tech, anyone can become their own designer and manufacturer.â€
