The internet has made it incredibly easy to explore and find your dream car. Whether you're eyeing a globally recognized brand or something more niche that might not even be available in your home country, every car manufacturer is just a click away.
Naturally, you might wonder: which car brand reigns supreme when it comes to global searches? Thanks to data from Google Trends, compiled by Compare the Market for 2022, we can see which brands dominate the online conversation across 155 countries. If you're curious about the most searched-for car brands worldwide—or specifically in your country—keep reading.
Toyota remains the undisputed king of the road. For the third consecutive year, Toyota tops the list in 69 of the 155 countries surveyed, capturing 44.5% of all searches. This steady dominance could be attributed to Toyota's reputation for reliability, as named by Consumer Reports as the most dependable car brand in 2022. Additionally, the company launched or refreshed over 15 models in 2022, keeping interest high throughout the year.
Interestingly, despite Toyota being the most searched brand globally, the U.S., where Toyota was most frequently queried, still preferred Ford as its favorite car brand.
BMW is gaining ground, climbing from 29 countries last year to 36 this year, securing the second spot. Conversely, Mercedes-Benz saw a noticeable dip, dropping from 23 countries to just 10.
Regional preferences play a significant role too. Kia has surged in popularity in the Middle East and North Africa, leading the search rankings in Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Palestine, Syria, and Uzbekistan. It also performs well in Ecuador, India, and Vietnam. Meanwhile, Volvo enjoys a strong following in Scandinavia and neighboring areas, holding top spots in its home country of Sweden, Finland, and even securing second place in Norway.
Tesla's star has dimmed somewhat. In 2021, it was the most searched car brand in five countries. Yet in 2022, it didn't top the charts anywhere, likely due to stiff competition from emerging EV brands like Polestar, Lucid, and Rivian, along with established manufacturers transitioning to an electric future.
This evolving landscape shows how quickly trends change in the automotive world. While some brands continue to thrive, others face challenges adapting to new consumer demands and technological shifts.
