China's petroleum equipment manufacturing industry wins the peak of global technology

"‘I have hosted many technical and product appraisal meetings, but today I am excited to be able to conduct the factory acceptance for this most advanced deep-sea oil rig in the world. For me, this is a rare opportunity.’ These were the words of Zhong Shude, a senior expert in China’s oil drilling rig industry, at the end of the year, as he attended the factory acceptance meeting for the 12,000-meter land-based oil drilling rig on November 15th. On that day, China's first 12,000-meter deep well land oil drilling rig with independent intellectual property rights, developed by China National Petroleum Corporation Baoji Petroleum Machinery Co., Ltd., successfully passed the factory acceptance. Zhong Shude was visibly thrilled. He remarked, ‘The successful development of the 12,000-meter drilling rig has broken the long-term technological blockade imposed by foreign high-end equipment on China and filled a domestic gap. It marks a milestone in the history of China’s oil drilling equipment development.’” **Core Components Are Mostly Localized** On a rainy winter day, reporters visited the test site of Baoji Petroleum Machinery Factory and saw the main structure of the 12,000-meter rig—standing 52 meters tall on a 12-meter-high base, with a K-type derrick. Just 10 meters away stood the first 9,000-meter ultra-deep oil rig, which had been successfully developed in December 2005. “Although the appearance of the 12,000-meter rig and the 9,000-meter rig looks similar, the differences in drilling depth require significant re-development of key components,” said Ma Yiping, director of the assembly department at Baoji Petroleum Machinery Factory. “Two years ago, we had already developed our own 9,000-meter rig, but 12,000 meters posed not only a challenge for Chinese professionals, but also a global difficulty.” It is known that before this, only the United States produced a 12,000-meter analog-controlled DC-driven drilling rig in the 1980s. However, even that model from 20 years ago lags significantly behind the all-digital AC frequency conversion land drilling rig developed by China in terms of system configuration, technical parameters, and performance. “The biggest highlight of this 12,000-meter rig is the integration of the most advanced technologies both domestically and internationally,” said Ma Yiping. “Except for diesel generators, which are imported from Caterpillar in the U.S., all other key components are independently developed. The core components are largely localized.” **World-Leading Innovation** Why develop such high-end oil drilling technology? When asked, Zhang Yongze, general manager of Baoji Petroleum Machinery Co., Ltd., gave a concise yet meaningful answer: “The 12,000-meter drilling rig was developed to meet China’s demand for deep oil and gas exploration and to improve the competitiveness of China’s oil drilling equipment in the international market.” Zhang explained that the development was driven by a real need. “After decades of oil and gas exploration, shallow and medium-depth resources have been largely tapped. However, deep and ultra-deep resources remain constrained due to limited drilling capabilities. With growing global energy demands, it’s essential to break through these technical barriers and explore deeper layers.” He added, “Oil drilling equipment is a strategic resource for the country. Relying solely on foreign technology is unrealistic. For a long time, foreign high-end equipment technology has dominated the domestic market, imposing high prices and long delivery times. That’s why we must rely on our own strength to develop this technology.” Zhong Shude echoed this sentiment. “Previously, China faced high costs and long lead times when purchasing special deep-well drilling equipment from developed countries. We needed to take control of our own energy security.” **From a Manufacturing Giant to a Manufacturing Power** China has long been seen as a “world factory,” especially in industries like automotive, textiles, and clothing. But the petroleum equipment industry has faced similar challenges. “Half of the world’s oil rigs are made in China, but we still lag behind in technical standards,” said Zhong Shude. “We lack high-end products, independent innovation, and reliable key equipment.” However, the success of the 12,000-meter drilling rig has brought new hope. “This achievement has enhanced China’s competitiveness in the global oil and gas market and elevated our status from a major producer to a strong player in the industry.” Zhong concluded, “Not only does this rig boost the brand value of Baoji Petroleum Machinery, but it also gives China a stronger voice in the international petroleum equipment sector. As global energy resources become scarcer, the 12,000-meter rig holds great commercial potential, not only for deep land exploration but also for offshore oil and gas projects.”
