The Case IH brand we know today is the result of several agricultural brands that evolved over time and eventually merged through strategic business combinations. Today, it's part of CNH Industrial, a global leader in agriculture and construction equipment.
Case IH specializes in agricultural machinery such as tractors, harvesters, loaders, tillage tools, planters, seeders, sprayers, balers, mowers, windrowers, wheel rakes, and forage harvesters. While Case IH focuses on farming equipment, its sister brand, Case Construction Equipment, handles construction machinery.
The story of Case IH began in 1842 when Jerome Increase Case founded the Racine Threshing Machine Works in Wisconsin. At the time, farm machinery was still in its infancy, and Case played a key role in developing mechanized equipment, including the thresher that separated grain from straw.

- 1842: J.I. Case founded the Racine Threshing Machine Works in Wisconsin. He improved the thresher to separate straw from grain.
- 1847: Cyrus McCormick established the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, which later became International Harvester.
- 1869: J.I. Case and Company produced the first steam engine tractor, used for powering other machines.
- 1876: Case built the first self-propelled traction steam engine, steered by horses.
- 1886: J.I. Case and Company became the world’s largest producer of steam engines.
- 1892: Case introduced its first gasoline-powered tractor, but the market wasn’t ready yet—ideas were shelved for two decades.
- 1902: The McCormick, Deering, Plano, Milwaukee, and Champion brands merged to form the International Harvester Company.
- 1911: Gasoline-powered tractors returned to the market after being developed in 1892, now with better infrastructure.
- 1915: International Harvester introduced kerosene-powered Titan tractors for plowing and belt work.
- 1923: Bert Benjamin designed the first Farmall, a unified system of tractors and implements for plowing, cultivation, and harvesting.
- 1935: International Harvester launched the first wheeled diesel tractor, the McCormick-Deering WD-40.
- 1985: J.I. Case and International Harvester merged into one brand: Case IH, becoming the second-largest farm equipment manufacturer.
- 1986: Steiger joined the Case IH lineup, with red 9100 series tractors introduced in 1988.
- 1988: Case IH launched the Magnum tractor, the first new model from combined engineering efforts.
- 1999: Fiat Group acquired Case Corporation and merged it with New Holland, forming CNH Global.
- 2013: CNH Global and Fiat Industrial merged into CNH Industrial.
- 2019: CNH Industrial announced plans to separate on-highway and off-highway businesses.
Steam Tractors
In 1869, J.I. Case built the first steam-powered tractor. At the time, steam engines were the dominant power source, fueled by coal and wood. These early tractors couldn’t steer themselves and relied on horses for direction.
Steam engines were the go-to solution for mechanical power before the rise of oil-based fuels. It wasn't until the late 19th century that gasoline and diesel engines started to gain traction. Case introduced its first gasoline-powered tractor in 1892, but the market wasn’t ready—so they paused development for nearly two decades.

Branding Over Time
The Case IH brand has gone through many transformations since its formation. From the original International Harvester logo in 1902 to the modern Case IH logo, the brand has evolved significantly.

CNH Industrial was formed in 2013 after a spin-off from Fiat. It now includes Case IH, Case Construction, New Holland, Iveco, FPT Industrial, and more. The company is headquartered in Basildon, UK, and controlled by Exor, an Italian investment firm.
With over 11,500 dealers worldwide, CNH Industrial serves multiple markets, including agriculture, construction, trucks, and military. Its CEO is Scott W. Wine, and it employs over 63,000 people across 67 factories and 56 R&D centers.

Multiple Brands, Separate Operations

Sergio Marchionne pushed for cost efficiencies by encouraging common components among Case, Case IH, and New Holland via FPT Industrial.

High-horsepower tractors are made in Fargo, North Dakota (Steiger Series), Racine, Wisconsin (Magnum Series), and Curitiba, Brazil (Magnum and Maxxum Series).
