A fire broke out this morning at 9401 S. Muskegan on Chicago’s South Side, starting in the basement and spreading upward, eventually causing an upper stairway to collapse. The incident injured four Chicago firefighters who were inside the building during the blaze.
The fire was first reported around 8:43 a.m. and quickly escalated, prompting over 200 firefighters to respond. According to Deputy District Chief Lynda Turner, the four injured were working on a stairwell connecting the second and third floors when the structure gave way. Fire Department Commander Sean Flynn confirmed that none of the firefighters suffered broken bones, though two experienced minor smoke inhalation and others had other non-serious injuries.
The "Mayday" call was made around 9 a.m., signaling the emergency. All four firefighters were taken to Trinity Hospital and are currently in stable condition. Local media captured the scene, with photos showing the damage and the firefighters' response efforts.
The fire started in a ground-floor unit and spread rapidly through the three-story building. Officials said the situation required a full-scale emergency response due to the structural instability caused by the flames.
