CFD Still & Box Alarm fire with mayday injures four firefighters

A fire broke out this morning at 9401 S. Muskegan on Chicago’s South Side, starting in the basement and quickly spreading upward through two floors. The blaze eventually caused an upper stairway to collapse, injuring four Chicago firefighters who were inside the building during the incident. The fire was reported at 8:43 a.m., and approximately 200 firefighters responded to the scene, according to Deputy District Chief Lynda Turner. The stairway that collapsed was located between the second and third floors, where the injured firefighters were working. Fire Department Commander Sean Flynn confirmed that none of the firefighters suffered broken bones, though two had minor smoke inhalation and others sustained other minor injuries. All four were taken to Trinity Hospital and are in good condition. Photos from the scene show the extent of the damage and the location where the stairway collapsed. One image captures the moment the structure gave way, while another highlights how the fire spread from the ground floor to the upper levels. A social media post from CFD Media also shared updates on the situation as it unfolded. The Chicago Tribune reported that a “Mayday” call was made around 9 a.m. as crews worked to contain the fire and assist the injured. Officials described the response as an emergency operation due to the rapid spread of flames and the structural instability caused by the fire. Residents in the area were advised to stay alert as crews continued their efforts to secure the building and prevent further damage. No civilians were reported injured in the incident, but the situation remains under close monitoring.
