2016 Emergency Response Guidebook

Excerpts from FireRescue1.com:

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has released the 2016 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG2016), offering a critical resource for first responders, including firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and law enforcement officers. This updated guide is designed to assist personnel in quickly identifying and managing hazards during incidents involving hazardous materials transportation.

Over 1.5 million free copies of the ERG2016 will be distributed nationwide to ensure that emergency workers have access to the most current information. The guide helps users recognize the risks associated with dangerous goods, as well as the appropriate safety procedures needed to protect themselves and control the situation effectively during the crucial initial moments of an incident.

The ERG includes a detailed list of hazardous materials, each identified by its four-digit United Nations number. It outlines the general dangers these substances pose and provides recommendations for safe response actions during hazmat incidents. This makes it an essential tool for emergency personnel who may encounter a wide range of chemical or material threats.

This version of the ERG features several updates, including expanded sections and new guide pages for absorbed gases. Published every four years through a collaborative effort between the USDOT, Transport Canada, and Mexico’s Secretariat of Transport and Communications, the ERG2016 is available at no cost to public safety agencies across all U.S. states, territories, and Native American tribes.

In addition, PHMSA has partnered with the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to offer a free smartphone version of the ERG2016. The NLM also manages the Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders, and the mobile app is set to launch this spring, making the guide even more accessible for on-the-go use.

A digital copy of the ERG2016 is now available online for public access. For those who prefer a physical copy, the guide can be purchased through the U.S. Government Printing Office Bookstore and other authorized commercial vendors. Whether digital or print, the ERG2016 remains a vital reference for anyone involved in emergency response to hazardous material incidents.
