High Feed Milling Principle

In recent years, the technology required to support high feed processing (HFM) has been rapidly developed.

Using this technique, machine operators can quickly remove large amounts of chips and thus significantly increase productivity.

The advantage of HFM milling cutters lies in the special geometry of the cutter itself and the insert. The lead angle and depth of cut are small. In order to achieve an acceptable value for the average chip breaking thickness, the feed per tooth must be high. Looking at the formula for calculating the average chip breaking thickness, this concept will become clear:

When the tool is full-edged (Dc/ae=1), the average chip breaking thickness is 0.1 mm. Another advantage of this type of tool and depth of cut is that the stress distribution is directed axially towards the main axis, ensuring stability and preventing elastic deformation caused by transverse stresses. Therefore, they are reliable tools, especially for long overhanging rough machining and cutting of difficult-to-machine materials such as high-temperature alloys and stainless steel.
