Raw materials environment pressure on both sides of the petrochemical industry

In response to the growing global demand for energy and petrochemical products, the international industry is increasingly emphasizing the need for stronger technological innovation. As economies around the world continue to expand, so does the need for energy and raw materials. However, this growth comes with challenges—rising energy costs, limited availability of resources, and the urgent need to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. At the 33rd International Petroleum and Chemical Conference in March 2008, the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA) called on global petrochemical producers to accelerate technological advancements to meet these pressing demands. Sherman J. Glass, Senior Vice President of ExxonMobil Chemical, highlighted that global chemical demand is expected to grow at a rate 2% higher than global GDP over the next few decades. Developing markets will see even faster growth, with Asia projected to account for 60% of global chemical demand by 2050, and China alone responsible for 40% of that increase. By 2030, the world’s population is expected to rise by 30%, and the global economy could double in size, reaching $75 trillion annually. Despite the rising importance of renewable energy, fossil fuels like oil, natural gas, and coal will still be the primary sources of energy. Although biofuels, wind, and solar energy are gaining traction, they currently make up less than 0.5% of total energy consumption and are expected to reach only 2% by 2030. Glass emphasized that petrochemical companies must prepare for future challenges early, and technological progress remains one of the most effective solutions. Graeme Sweeney, Executive Vice President of Fuels and CO2 Business at Shell, also stressed the importance of addressing climate change as a global issue. He urged greater collaboration between industry, regulators, and other stakeholders to tackle energy sustainability and environmental concerns. The industry is now grappling with three major challenges: increasing global energy demand, especially for oil and natural gas; the difficulty of meeting this demand due to limited access to conventional oil reserves; and the environmental impact of rising energy use, which leads to higher CO2 emissions and exacerbates global warming. These issues require innovative strategies, sustainable practices, and a collective effort from all sectors to ensure long-term energy security and environmental responsibility.
