For the first time, Chinese automotive electronics manufacturers have made significant breakthroughs in the front-end automotive market. On August 23, the first domestically produced car equipped with a homegrown electronic control system rolled off the production line in Chongqing. He Jianjun, vice president of Konka Group, announced that the company’s Engine Fuel Injection (EFI) system will enter mass production and sales, initially for the "off" mini-car model from Dongfeng Group.
Previously, Chinese automotive electronics companies were limited to supplying audio systems, car DVDs, and similar products in the front-end market. No domestic firm had managed to penetrate the core components of vehicle systems. In contrast, the back-end market—focused on car modifications and maintenance—is much less competitive, dominated by local players with cost advantages. However, low entry barriers and open technology have led to fierce competition, with many companies facing the risk of being left behind if they don’t adapt quickly.
In the front-end market, Konka is taking a proactive approach. According to Chang Jing, general manager of Konka’s automotive division, the EFI system is crucial for engine performance, often referred to as the "heart" of the car. With high technical barriers and strict access controls, the market was long dominated by global giants like Bosch, Delphi, and Motorola. But Konka has been working for years to change that.
Konka's journey began in 2002 when it recruited top talent from international firms like Motorola and Bosch. Over two years, the team studied foreign systems while tailoring their own to meet the needs of the Chinese market. After extensive testing and development, Konka launched its own EFI system, which passed national certification in 2005.
The collaboration with Dongfeng started in 2005, with Konka providing the control system for the “Dongfeng Xiaokang†mini-vehicle. Following rigorous tests under various conditions, the system proved reliable, earning Konka its "life permit" into the market. The company now has seven major automakers on board, with two joint ventures expected to begin receiving Konka’s products this month.
Chang Jing attributes Konka’s success to both its global R&D team and its localization strategy. With China’s diverse market demands and long verification cycles, Konka’s ability to offer tailored solutions gives it a unique edge. Additionally, the company benefits from cost efficiency, as key components are either developed locally or sourced at favorable prices through its brand influence.
While Konka thrives in the front-end market, the back-end sector remains highly competitive. Many smaller players struggle due to limited resources. For instance, Lin Jin, who once ran a company producing automotive diagnostic tools, faced financial difficulties and eventually shut down his business in 2005. Despite initial investor interest, internal disagreements and lack of funding led to failure.
Another example is Yuanzheng Technology, which once dominated the diagnostic equipment market but expanded too quickly, leading to losses in other sectors. This overextension forced the company to scale back its operations. Despite challenges, industry experts believe the auto service market will continue to grow, offering opportunities for those who can adapt.
According to Roland Berger, China’s auto market reached 1 trillion yuan in 2005, with the service sector valued at 120 billion yuan. By 2010, it’s expected to reach 200 billion. As Chinese manufacturers like Konka push into high-end markets, the future of automotive electronics looks promising—but only for those who can innovate and sustain growth.
