Lanzhou Petrochemical Catalytic Cracking MIP Process Trial Successful
Gansu Lanzhou Petrochemical Institute's Research Institute has recently successfully completed industrial trial production of two new catalytic cracking catalysts: LIP-100, designed for isoparaffin production, and LIP-200, aimed at increasing propylene yield and gasoline octane rating. These developments mark a significant step forward in improving fuel quality and reducing emissions in China’s petrochemical industry.
With the growing demand for clean fuels and the need to reduce vehicle exhaust pollution, the composition of gasoline in China heavily relies on catalytic cracked gasoline. However, high olefin content remains a major challenge affecting gasoline quality. Among various improved fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) processes introduced in recent years, the MIP (Middle Distillate Isomerization Process) technology stands out for its ability to produce low-olefin, cleaner gasoline.
To meet the rising demand for propylene and enhance gasoline octane ratings, the Lanzhou Petrochemical Research Institute developed LIP-100 and LIP-200 catalysts tailored for the specific needs of the MIP process. These catalysts are designed to optimize the performance of catalytic cracking units, enhancing both product yields and operational efficiency.
In May, LIP-100 was first applied in the heavy oil catalytic cracking unit at Jinxi Petrochemical Company. By July 28, a total of 440 tons of LIP-100 had been used, with a system content of 85%. Compared to previous operations, the results showed a 1.0% increase in liquid hydrocarbon yield and a 0.7% rise in gasoline yield, along with a 0.9% overall increase in total liquid yield. At the same time, dry gas, coke, and slurry yields dropped by 0.3%, 0.2%, and 0.5% respectively. This demonstrates the catalyst's strong heavy oil conversion capability.
Moreover, the LIP-100 catalyst significantly reduced gasoline olefins to around 30%, increased the gasoline octane number by 1.6 units, and boosted propylene yield by 1.28 units. The industrial test results confirmed that the catalyst not only maintains high activity stability but also exhibits excellent abrasion resistance. Its enhanced accessibility of active centers allows for more efficient cracking of heavy oil molecules, leading to higher target product yields and lower coke formation.
Meanwhile, the LIP-200 catalyst was introduced into the heavy oil catalytic cracking unit at Anqing Petrochemical Company on June 20. So far, the catalyst reserves have exceeded 50%, and it is performing well under operational conditions. These achievements highlight the promising future of these new catalysts in supporting the industry's shift toward cleaner, more efficient refining processes.
