Gansu Lanzhou Petrochemical Institute's Research Institute has recently successfully completed industrial trial production of two new catalytic cracking catalysts: LIP-100, designed for isoparaffin production, and LIP-200, aimed at boosting propylene yield and gasoline octane rating. These developments mark a significant step forward in optimizing the performance of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) processes.
With the increasing demand for clean fuels and reduced vehicle emissions, the petrochemical industry faces critical challenges. In China, the majority of gasoline components come from catalytic cracked gasoline, which often contains high levels of olefins—posing a major issue for fuel quality. Among various FCC technologies introduced in recent years, the MIP (Multi-Stage Injection Process) technology stands out for its ability to produce low-olefin, cleaner gasoline.
To enhance propylene output and maximize gasoline octane, the Lanzhou Petrochemical Research Institute developed LIP-100 and LIP-200 catalysts tailored for the unique requirements of the MIP process. These catalysts are designed to improve heavy oil conversion while reducing undesirable byproducts.
In May, LIP-100 was first applied in the heavy oil catalytic unit at Jinxi Petrochemical Company. By July 28, a total of 440 tons of LIP-100 had been used, with a system content of 85%. The results were impressive: liquid hydrocarbon yield increased by 1.0%, gasoline yield rose by 0.7%, and total liquid yield went up by 0.9%. At the same time, dry gas, coke, and slurry yields dropped by 0.3%, 0.2%, and 0.5% respectively. The catalyst also reduced gasoline olefins to around 30%, raised the octane number by 1.6 units, and boosted propylene yield by 1.28%.
Industrial trials confirmed that LIP-100 exhibits excellent activity stability and wear resistance. Its enhanced accessibility to active sites allows more efficient cracking of heavy oil molecules, leading to higher target product yields. This not only improves heavy oil conversion but also reduces coke formation and increases propylene output.
LIP-200 was introduced into the heavy oil catalytic unit at Anqing Petrochemical Company on June 20. Currently, the catalyst reserves exceed 50%, and it is performing well under operational conditions. These advancements highlight the growing importance of advanced catalytic technologies in meeting environmental standards and improving the efficiency of refining processes.
