Tanker rolls and closes I294 3-20-12

Tim Olk spent most of Tuesday stationed in the southbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), capturing the aftermath of a major incident that caused significant traffic disruption. According to a report from the Southtown Star: "...an overturned tanker led to the closure of the southbound lanes between 95th and 127th streets. The lanes remained closed from before noon until around 8 p.m., turning rush-hour traffic into a chaotic mess..." The accident occurred when a vehicle made an illegal U-turn in front of the tanker, causing it to flip over at approximately 11:43 a.m. at 127th Street, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Michelle Kistulinec. The tanker was carrying hydrochloric acid, a hazardous substance that required immediate attention from emergency crews. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the spill, using sand to absorb the chemical and prevent further spread. Contractors later began the delicate process of off-loading the remaining contents from the tanker. Several heavy wreckers were brought in to upright the tractor and empty trailer, a complex operation that took time and careful coordination. See the complete article HERE.
