Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:
A 28-year-old former firefighter from Winthrop Harbor, Keith Kauppi, is currently being held on a $1 million bail following charges of aggravated arson and attempted murder. He is accused of setting fire to his 70-year-old aunt’s home in an attempt to frame her for multiple fires in both Winthrop Harbor and Pleasant Prairie.
Kauppi was arrested after confessing to starting a fire at his aunt Kathleen Kauppi’s house in December and another in June, which left her with mild to severe burns. According to authorities, the aunt was recently arrested in Pleasant Prairie for an arson incident, but those charges were dropped after Kauppi admitted to starting that fire as well.
Joel Brumlik, chief of the Winthrop Harbor Police Department, revealed that the arson attempts were linked to Kauppi’s ongoing scheme to hide his thefts. In February, Kauppi was fired from his job at the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department after being accused of forging checks from his aunt’s bank account. At the time, his aunt chose not to press charges.
Brumlik explained that the fires were likely an attempt by Kauppi to cover up his crimes by killing his aunt. Last week, the aunt moved in with her brother, and a fire broke out at the family home. According to a Pleasant Prairie Police complaint, Kathleen Kauppi was sleeping on a couch when she was awakened by a loud crash. Her nephew and parents rushed downstairs to find the couch on fire.
The nephew told investigators he tried to put out the fire with water and then helped carry the burned furniture outside. He also mentioned that the living room smelled strongly of gasoline. A responding officer confirmed the presence of a strong gasoline odor on the couch, a burned blanket, and scorched clothing found outside.
Kathleen Kauppi reportedly told police she had no idea how the fire started and angrily told her relatives she would never speak to them again. Meanwhile, Kauppi had resumed attempting to forge his aunt’s checks this week, leading to his arrest and subsequent interrogation.
During the interview, Kauppi eventually confessed. Afterward, he led an investigator from Winthrop Harbor to the scene and showed where he had placed the gasoline used in the fire, according to Sgt. Chris Willets of the local police department.
