The Burnham Fire Department received multiple calls yesterday reporting a fire at a three-story apartment building located at 14000 S. Torrence Avenue. When the first units arrived, heavy smoke was already visible on the first floor, prompting an immediate upgrade to a MABAS Box Alarm. Additional units from nearby departments, including Calumet City, Dolton, South Holland, and Munster, Indiana, quickly responded to assist in containing the blaze.
Despite the initial intensity of the fire, crews were able to bring it under control relatively quickly, and no injuries were reported. The incident occurred on Saturday, adding to the ongoing efforts of local firefighters who often work long hours during emergencies.
Tim Olk, a local photographer, captured several images of the scene after the fire had been extinguished. His photos provide a glimpse into the response and the equipment that arrived on the scene. One image shows firefighters relaxing after the operation, while others highlight the various apparatus involved, including engines, trucks, and even a ladder truck from the Munster Fire Department.
Among the responding units was Burnham Engine 2014, a 2007 HME Ahrens-Fox, which was the first engine on the scene. Another unit, Burnham Engine 2016, a 1996 HME SFO Luverne, was staged nearby. Calumet City Truck 309 was positioned in the 'A' Sector to support hand lines, while South Holland Engine 665, built by Smeal on an HME chassis, was also on site to assist.
Munster’s Truck 2221, an American LaFrance/LTI tower ladder, was part of the mutual aid effort as a member of MABAS Division 24. Additionally, the Third District Fire Chief's Association provided a canteen unit to help with firefighter rehabilitation.
