On Thursday, January 14, at approximately 1:07 p.m., Evanston firefighters were called to the 300 block of Dempster Street after receiving a report of an automatic fire alarm in a multi-story residential building.
The first units on the scene encountered moderate smoke and fire conditions on the third floor. Thanks to a rapid and aggressive interior attack, combined with the activation of the building's fire sprinklers, the fire was quickly brought under control and confined to the unit of origin within about 10 minutes of arrival. The swift response helped prevent the fire from spreading further.
A middle-aged woman was found unresponsive in her apartment, without a pulse and not breathing. Firefighters immediately evacuated her to safety and began emergency resuscitation efforts. While being transported to a local hospital, paramedics successfully revived her. She is currently in the intensive care unit and is in stable condition.
Additional fire equipment from neighboring communities supported the City of Evanston's efforts during the incident, ensuring continued station coverage while EFD units focused on extinguishing the blaze.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by local authorities.
